FANS, MEET YOUR CORPORATE SPONSORS

In the current BUSINESS WEEK, Peter Burrows looks at 3Com
Corp., the "fastest growing player in networking hardware." 3Com
Chair Eric Benhamou says he knew all along there would be "a
backlash from sports fans" when they purchased naming rights to
Candlestick Park, but Burrows writes Benhamou "is getting more
than he bargained for: from ill will in the Bay Area to
nationally syndicated cartoons." Benhamou: "We're trying to
bring the networking industry out of its shadow, and I knew we
would have to break a few eggs in the process." Benhamou did
note there were 40 mentions of 3Com on NBC's national telecast of
the September 10 49ers game (BUSINESS WEEK, 10/2 issue). In
today's WALL STREET JOURNAL, KeyCorp. marketing head Stephen Cone
is profiled. His "mandate is to overhaul KeyCorp's marketing
effort," which has included the newly named Key Arena, home of
the Sonics in Seattle. At the Key Arena, ATM's will have "video
games attached to their backs for the children of customers"
(WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/25).
