OFF THE BIKE AND ON THE COURT! THERE'S NO "I" IN DUMARS

NBA star Joe Dumars and partners Brian Siegel and Scott
Kauffman have "built what just may be the prototypical 'health
club for the '90's': a $2.4 million complex that puts
recreational team sports into a new league," according to
Christopher Hansen of MEN'S JOURNAL. Situated 30-minutes from
downtown Detroit, the facility is the first in a network of
sports clubs which encourages athletic enthusiasts to participate
in team sports. Siegel: "We think teams sports are something
that's more '90's than 80's." The "Joe Dumars Fieldhouse" has
basketball courts, roller hockey rinks, indoor and outdoor beach
volleyball court, as well as hardwood volleyball courts. Hansen
writes, "The overall effect is dynamic -- an inducement to
participate." The cost is $6 a night and a signed waiver form,
with 15,000 basketball waivers signed since February. At first,
Dumars believed hockey would be the "slow part of the business,"
but the "phenomenal growth" of the in-line program has
"surprised" the partners. The group is already "scouting new
locations, possibly to open in conjunction with local sports
celebrities" (MEN'S JOURNAL, 10/95 issue).
