MEDIA NOTES

     The IHL Vipers announced that Detroit's WDFN-AM will
broadcast all 82 of the team's games.  WDFN currently carries MSU
football and basketball and selected NASCAR events
(Vipers)....Paul Schulman, President of Schulman Media, on Fox's
purchase of Tyson-Mathis:  "It's a smart move by Fox, and
something that's salable; I see Anheuser-Busch and Nike's name
all over it.  The only problem is boxing is viewed as a blood
sport; packaged-goods advertisers wouldn't be interested."
BROADCASTING & CABLE notes that advertisers believe, at $200,000
per :30, Fox could generate more than $11M in sales (B&C,
9/18)....Cheryl Miller, formerly coach of USC's women's
basketball, will be named today as a reporter and analyst for
Turner Sports' NBA coverage (L.A. TIMES, 9/19)....Rudy Martzke
reports that Fox has made an offer for the U.S. Open, "probably
topping CBS' $31 million a year" -- but CBS has the right to
match any bid below the USTA's $38M asking price (USA TODAY,
9/19).... Sega Enterprises said it plans to bring its first PC
CD-ROM games to market this fall (VARIETY, 9/19)....The Golf
Channel has announced that Cablevision is converting the channel
from premium to standard in FL, meaning the universe of Central
FL viewers for TGC will jump from 600 to 110,000 (ORLANDO
SENTINEL, 9/19)....The Toronto Sun is expected to announce its
plans today to launch a weekly sports tabloid for the British
Columbia market.  The weekly would be published at the Calgary
Sun (GLOBE & MAIL, 9/19).... Tonight's Phillies-Marlins game will
be simulcast on PRISM and SportsChannel Philadelphia, with SC's
coverage offering an in-depth look at the managers' strategies
(PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 9/19)....In Chicago, Steve Nidetz writes
that the recent incident involving Harry Caray -- in which he
referred to "slanty eyes" before a game in which Hideo Nomo was
pitching -- "appears to represent another controversy the
resilient Caray will survive" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 9/19).
