NOT A FINANCIAL HALL OF FAME -- HOCKEY SHOWCASE IN THE RED

Two years after opening, the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto
"has not been a financial success," according to William Houston
of the GLOBE & MAIL. The facility lost money in the fiscal year
that ended in June and has "just broken even" since opening.
Hall of Fame President David Taylor denied the Hall lost as much
as C$700,000 last year, but admitted, "It wasn't the best year
for us." Hall Chair Ian Morrison said high attendance figures
during the first year "probably led to unrealistic expectations."
The Hall's attendance is believed to have dropped from 500,000 in
the first year to 350,000 last year. Taylor believes that the
Hall, located near SkyDome and Maple Leaf Gardens, was hurt by
the MLB and NHL labor problems. Hall views the facility as a
"go-with attraction" and noted that poor play by the Jays has
also had an impact. The Hall has hired Brian Black as
VP/Marketing to spur attendance and give the attraction a higher
profile (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 9/12).
