OWNERS IN THE NEWS

Eagles Owner JEFFREY LURIE is profiled in this morning's
PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER football preview section. Lurie, on owners
who put profit first: "I can't quite fathom why anyone would own
a football team except to win Super Bowls." Lurie, on being an
owner: "You can really be a catalyst for change. People look to
the sports team owners as leaders in the city. I can try to make
a better life for more people" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER,
8/31)....The latest issue of SI examines Yankees Owner GEORGE
STEINBRENNER's involvement in illegal campaign contributions to
the '72 Nixon campaign. The VILLAGE VOICE recently "rummaged
through" boxes of documents in the National Archives and found
the files "paint a picture not of the swashbuckling leader
Steinbrenner fancies himself to be, but of a decidedly yellow
fellow who, desperate to cut a deal that would keep him out of
prison, was willing to sing to Watergate prosecutors about others
who made illegal donations to the Nixon team" (SI, 9/4 issue).
