MINNEAPOLIS TRIES TO FIGURE SIZE OF SPORTS "PIE"

The Advisory Task Force on Professional Sports in
Minneapolis met for the second time on the future of sports in
the Twin Cities, with a scheduled address by former CBS Sports
President Neal Pilson. As the Board considers whether the city
can support four major league franchises, the STAR TRIBUNE's Jay
Weiner examines the area's limit to sports spending. Weiner
writes that Minnesotans "only have so much discretionary income.
It's not as much as Chicagoans or Detroiters. Minnesotans will
pay only so much for a ticket." Commission Chair Henry
Savelkoul: "There's no doubt in my mind that they are enough
discretionary dollars for four (major) teams." But he notes
people aren't spending those discretionary dollars on sports in
the wake of the baseball strike and the Vikings' "off-the-field
woes" (Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE, 8/29).
