ANALYSTS SAY ADIDAS MOVE TO GO PUBLIC COMES AT RIGHT TIME

The possible public offering by Adidas is examined by
Rohwedder & Marshall in this morning's WALL STREET JOURNAL.
Analysts say "the group's current revival presents a perfect time
to do so. .... At the moment, sports and leisure are among the
strongest growing sectors in the consumer-goods market." Adidas
current strength, following some "tough times" in the '80s, is an
indication that German sporting-goods makers "are fending off the
run on their home market" by Nike and Reebok. Other pro-Adidas
factors: 1) An "aggressive marketing campaign" including
sponsorship of streetball, skateboarding, mountain-biking, street
hockey; 2) A shift of most of production out of Germany and work
force cuts; 3) "Concentrated marketing, product design, and
development" at HQs in Herzogenaurach and Portland; and, 4) New
soccer and running shoes (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/18).
