NAMES IN THE NEWS

     VARIETY features MAGIC JOHNSON's new movie theater in
Baldwin Hills, CA.  Johnson is a "regular customer" at the
theater, showing up several times a week, shaking hands, signing
autographs and seeing movies....VARIETY also reports that HBO is
among "several" studios interested in making a movie on MICKEY
MANTLE's life.  Universal is also rumored to have offered a
"seven-figure" bid, although the company denies it (VARIETY, 8/13
issue)....JOHN DALY was on the "Tonight Show" last night.  Daly,
dressed in a leopard skin suit jacket, shaved a guest's hair to
make it look like his.  Daly then hit donut holes with his driver
into the audience ("Tonight Show," NBC, 8/8).....JOHN KRUK was
guest on David Letterman last night.  Kruk on how he is now
living his "life of leisure": "I get up early every morning and
lay on the couch.  I watch a lot of talk shows -- Montel
Williams, Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake, but she's got a lot of sick
people on there.  I thought I met a lot of sick people playing
ball, but my God, you can't hold a candle to those people" ("Late
Show," CBS, 8/8)....Several NBA Players will star in the comedy
movie "Eddie" with Whoopi Goldberg and Frank Langella.  Among the
players: JOHN SALLEY, MALIK SEALY, RICK FOX, GARY PAYTON, DWAYNE
SCHINTZIUS and GREG OSTERTAG.  The movie is about a basketball
fan who is made head coach of a team in a publicity stunt (N.Y.
POST, 8/9).
