WIN OVER ARGENTINA SEEN AS MAJOR BOOST FOR U.S. SOCCER

7.17.1995

     U.S. National Team coach Steve Sampson called the U.S.'s 3-0
win over Argentina in the Copa America tournament "by far one of
the biggest wins in U.S. soccer history" (Calvin Sims, N.Y.
TIMES, 7/15).  The win garnered major headlines across the
country, including a banner header in the WASHINGTON POST's sport
section (WASHINGTON POST, 7/15).  In Chicago, Philip Hersh
writes, "Never before has a U.S. soccer team played so well for
an extended period against top competition" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
7/16).
