NJSEA CHAIR SAYS HE'S PREPARED TO SPEND FOR BOXES

NJSEA Chair Robert Mulcahy said yesterday that improvements
to Brendan Byrne Arena have to be "revenue-neutral," and that the
authority is willing to spend up to $40M to build more luxury
boxes, according to this morning's Bergen RECORD. Mulcahy, who
appeared on a North Jersey public-affairs program, said the NJSEA
is looking at ringing the top of the arena with boxes. Mulcahy:
"We can finance whatever we do out of the revenues we project to
get from these enhanced facilities ... so we're not looking at
your pocket." Mulcahy said the authority is concerned about
filling new boxes, noting that MSG has a 25% vacancy rate for its
suites. Meanwhile, negotiations between the NJSEA and Devils
continue, but "progress toward a deal appears to have slowed"
with the draft tomorrow. VP/Public Relations Arthur Pincus: "I
would be surprised if anything got done before next week"
(Fitzgerald/Hirsch, Bergen RECORD, 7/7).
