BOSTON'S MEGAPLEX BECOMES A POLITICAL FOOTBALL

The "depth of opposition" to Boston's proposed megaplex by
residents of South Boston "surprised veteran politicians" -- even
Boston City Council President James Kelly, who represents the
neighborhood. But MA Senate President William Bulger, another
South Boston native, urged residents to "weigh their options
before rejecting" the proposed stadium-convention center complex
which would be built near their homes. Kelly, who had backed a
convention center and dome, but not a baseball stadium for the
Red Sox, said after the meeting that he now also opposes the dome
(Geeta Anand, BOSTON GLOBE, 6/28). Kelly called a new Red Sox
stadium "unthinkable and undoable," to which Red Sox VP John
Buckley said, "I'm at a loss to understand why we can't sit down
and talk about it." Bulger got "cheers" when he told the group
that Gov. William Weld was open to finding a new site for the Red
Sox stadium (Phil Primack, BOSTON HERALD, 6/28).
