THE WORD ACCORDING TO MCENROE: TENNIS NEEDS HELP IN USA

During a conference call on NBC's Wimbledon coverage, John
McEnroe addressed the state of tennis in the U.S. He noted that
tennis is much more popular in Europe and that the game is seen
here as an "elitist sport." McEnroe: "Here they put you in
basketball, football, baseball, and maybe even a couple of other
sports before tennis." McEnroe said tennis should look at the
way both pro golf and the NBA reach out on a grassroots level and
get involved through charity work. McEnroe: "People need to see
these people (tennis players) in person, see that they're human
beings. Now they just see them going from city to city playing
in tournaments and that's boring" (THE DAILY).
SHOULDN'T THAT DESIGN BE AT FLUSHING MEADOWS? ESPN's Ketih
Olbermann, on the new roof over Wimbledon's Stadium Court: "It
looks like a commode" ("SportsCenter," 6/26).
