METS MAY MOVE TO BELMONT PARK; COULD TAKE JETS WITH THEM

Mets Co-Owner Nelson Doubleday said yesterday the club has
had "discussions" with the Nassau County Sports Commission about
the Mets moving to a new multi-purpose sports complex on the site
of Belmont Park, according to Marty Noble of N.Y. NEWSDAY. Noble
also reports that Doubleday has tried, "and may try again," to
buy the Jets and eventually move them from the Meadowlands to the
proposed facility. Mets VP of Business Affairs David Howard said
the Mets have not "abandoned" the idea of moving to a new stadium
close to Shea Stadium and is considering other sites -- "more
than three in and around the New York City area." Noble notes
New York's decision not to construct a monorail connecting
midtown to LaGuardia, Shea Stadium, and the National Tennis
Center had reduced the Mets' interest in remaining in Queens
(Marty Noble, N.Y. NEWSDAY, 6/21).
