More than 25,000 fans are expected to attend Shinnecock
Hills Golf Club in Southampton, NY, each day of the four-day U.S.
Open. Andrea Gurvitz of the Suffolk County Visitors Bureau, said
that visitors are expected to spend close to $25M by Sunday
night's final round. But the biggest local beneficiary" is
Shinnecock itself, which is getting $1M from the USGA for the
club's use. Companies sponsoring the event and entertaining
there can expect to spend upwards of $500,000 (Paul Tharp, N.Y.
POST, 6/16).
CALLAWAY'S NEW SHARE PLAN: Callaway Golf Company announced
that its Board has approved the adoption of a shareholder rights
plan similar to those of many public companies. The plan
provides for distribution to shareholders of one preferred stock
purchase "right" for each outstanding share of common stock
(Callaway Golf).
HOW FAR WILL CROW GO? Tim Crow, founder and Vice Chair of
Cobra Golf, will participate in the launching of Automated Golf
Yardage Systems. Crow has teamed up with Yardmark, who
originated the concept of providing golfers with instant yardage
from anywhere on the golf course. The golf cart has a display
that provides distance and placement information. Crow said the
new system will "revolutionize the way we play golf" (Yardmark).
