     TONY MEOLA, the U.S. Soccer Team's top goaltender since '89,
was dropped from the team because his other pursuits have taken
away from his game, according to U.S. Interim Coach Steve Sampson
(DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/1)....MICKEY MANTLE is undergoing tests at
Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas "as the result of a
stomach ailment that hospitalized him Sunday" (DALLAS MORNING
NEWS, 6/1).... MSG President DAVE CHECKETTS says he does not want
PAT RILEY to go into next season without a contract extension.
Riley has one year left in a five-year, $6M deal.  Checketts: "I
believe he will (be back)" (NEWSDAY, 6/1)....GEORGE FOREMAN said
yesterday he would not fight EVANDER HOLYFIELD because "he can
make just as much money against an opponent less dangerous than
Holyfield."  Foreman: "I won't fight Holyfield.  It's cut and
dried.  Period.  Now if you give me $25 million, we can move the
period over a little bit" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 6/1)....Dodgers
radio voice VIN SCULLY was profiled on "CBS This Morning."  Asked
if he considers himself a symbol of the game he replied, "Not in
my house.  I still take out the garbage" (CBS, 6/1).
