STADIUM DEALS UNDER REVIEW BY REDS AND BENGALS

A proposal being pursued by regional politicians and
executives calls for the Reds and Bengals to get side-by-side
stadiums on Cincinnati's riverfront, according to the CINCINNATI
ENQUIRER. While neither Reds Owner Marge Schott nor Bengals
Owner Mike Brown have approved the proposal, architects of the
deal are optimistic the plan could get their "approval" by early
summer. Brown is reportedly interested enough in the package to
"ignore overtures" from Baltimore. Under the plan, the Reds
would have a new ballpark built, much like the new parks built in
Cleveland, Denver and Baltimore, just west of the Roebling
Suspension bridge. The Bengals would get a new facility "built
on the skeleton" of Riverfront Stadium. At the request of OH
Gov. George Voinovich, the OH Office of Budget Management is now
studying how the state can provide as much as 15% of the
project's cost. Cincinnati Mayor Roxanne Qualls called talk
about negotiations and stadium plans are "complete speculation"
(Green & Hobson, CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 5/20).
