     JOE MONTANA has signed on as a partner with the Target/Chip
Ganassi Racing Indy Car team.  Montana will be involved with the
team's marketing, business promotions and sponsor relations
(IMG)....Ten YANKEES will present the "Top 10 Best Reasons to
Play in New York," on DAVID LETTERMAN's "Late Show" tonight on
CBS (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/26)....An editorial in this morning's
WASHINGTON POST proclaims this baseball season as "The Year of
Cal," honoring Oriole CAL RIPKEN's streak as "a sustained
celebration of the old-fashioned virtues" (WASHINGTON POST,
4/26)....Former NBA player TRENT TUCKER has a new line of sports
apparel called "From The 3" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/25)....IOC
President JUAN ANTONIO SAMARANCH has reportedly started a
campaign for reelection in '97.  He has sent IOC colleagues a
letter seeking views on raising the retirement age from 75.
Samaranch is currently 75 (USA TODAY, 4/26)....CHARLES BARKLEY
was on the "Tonight Show" last night.  Barkley, asked if he would
like to act:  "The only problem is they work too hard.  That
takes hours.  I practice for an hour a day and I'm done.  I mean
Jay, seriously, I've never had a job" ("Tonight Show," NBC,
4/25)....The Special Commission studying a Megaplex in Boston is
expected to approve the hiring of a consultant to negotiate lease
terms with the Red Sox and Patriots.  The panel is reportedly
"leaning toward" Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin Senior Managing
Partner PAUL MUCH.  The commission also is considering Deloitte &
Touche's STEWART ROG, but is said to have rejected Boston sports
attorney ROBERT CAPORALE (BOSTON HERALD, 4/26).
