IS MARINERS STADIUM SUPPORT IN JEOPARDY IF JOHNSON TRADED?

State legislators in favor of a new retractable-roof
facility for the Mariners got a boost when House representatives
voted in favor of sending a stadium finance bill back to
committee. State Rep. Marlin Appelwick received the needed 50
votes during a second ballot on Friday, one day after the bill
was defeated in an initial vote (Joseph Turner, Tacoma MORNING
NEWS TRIBUNE, 4/15). Recent reports one WA legislator believes
the Mariners possible trade of ace Randy Johnson could have a
negative impact on their request for state assistance (Buster
Olney, Baltimore SUN, 4/17). If the Mariners stay intact and
have a successful season, it "could boost local support" for a
new facility (Jim Street, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 4/17).
