REDSKINS STILL SEARCHING; COOKE READY TO PLAY BALTIMORE CARD?

Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke, "increasingly frustrated by
zoning delays, is ready to pull the plug on efforts to build a
football stadium" near Laurel, MD, and has "intensified his
search" for a new site in Prince George's County, MD, according to
Michael Abramowitz of the WASHINGTON POST. Sources familiar with
the planning said that Cooke not only is concerned about the
prospect of a long fight with local opponents, "but also has come
to realize" that he will not sway MD Gov. Parris Glendening from
opposition to the Laurel site. Glendening reaffirmed his
opposition to the Laurel site in an interview last night. Several
sites in Prince George's County are the "leading contenders," but
state government sources said that Cooke has not ruled out moving
his team near Camden Yards in Baltimore. The state already has
approved funding to build a stadium in the event Baltimore
attracts an NFL franchise (WASHINGTON POST, 3/9).
