IOC PRESIDENT FAVORS ENDING WITH MARATHON

12.19.1994

     IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch said Saturday that
organizers of the Olympic Games in Atlanta "should stick with
tradition and end the Games with the epic event" -- the men's
marathon.  Samaranch's position runs contrary to the beliefs of
the IOC medical commission, as well as many athletes, who favor
running the marathon in the cooler morning temparatures.
Samaranch also expressed satisfaction with the weeklong joint
meeting between the Association of National Olympic Committees
and the IOC executive board
(Melissa Turner, ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 12/18).
