COOKE FACING GROUPS OF "CONCERNED CITIZENS" AT EVERY TURN

A group of Washington, DC, residents said that they oppose
any efforts by Jack Kent Cooke to revive plans to build a new
stadium for the Redskins near RFK Stadium. Cooke had intended to
build a stadium in nearby Laurel MD, but last Wednesday a county
officer denied Cooke's plan citing concern over increased traffic
and limited parking. Concerned Citizens of Kingman Park Chair
Veronica Raglin said that a new stadium in DC would have a
"devastating impact on the neighborhood environmentally." Among
the environmental problems cited by stadium opponents are
dangerous levels of asbestos in the framework of RFK, serious
levels of possibly toxic lead in the soil around the stadium
site, car exhaust and noise (Matt Neufeld, WASHINGTON TIMES,
10/17).
