Guardiola Re-Ups With Man City, Ending Speculation Over Future

Man City Manager Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the '22-23 season. Guardiola has guided Man City to two EPL titles and an FA Cup since his arrival in '16. The Spaniard's current five-year stay at City is the "longest spell in charge of a single club" since he began his managerial career in '08 (REUTERS, 11/19).

If Guardiola remains at Man City until the end of his new contract, he will have spent seven seasons in charge of the club, making him the club’s "longest-serving manager" since Les McDowell, who was in charge from '50-63. Man City had "always hoped that the former Barcelona manager would remain at the club," but it had started analyzing potential replacements if it was unable to persuade Guardiola to stay on. Guardiola had "looked uncomfortable during recent press conferences when asked about his future." He insisted that he had to "earn" a new contract after losing the EPL title to Liverpool last season (LONDON TIMES, 11/19).
