RFEF Wants European Qualification Based On Current Standings

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) plans to "award qualification to next season's Champions League and Europa League based on the current standings" if LaLiga cannot be completed, a source said. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Real Sociedad would all qualify for the Champions League, while Atletico Madrid and Getafe would qualify for the Europa League. In the event the league is "able to restart but is then unable to be finished, the standings at the time of the suspension of the league would be used to decide European qualification" (ESPN.com, 4/16).

In Ligue 1, which is still hoping to resume its season in June, the "majority of clubs" have taken out "loans guaranteed by the French government." Sources said that Dijon "applied for" a loan of €5M ($5.4M) while Saint-Etienne "made a similar request." Strasbourg has "already received its loan." PSG has not yet "made a demand" (L'EQUIPE, 4/16).

An agreement on how to finish the Serie A season is also "proving evasive." Italian health official Giovanni Rezza described the Italian Football Federation's plans for testing of players as a "bit of a stretch" and said that he was "not in favour of a quick re-start." Meanwhile, "some clubs want the season abandoned altogether" (REUTERS, 4/16).
