HBO's Diego Maradona Documentary Getting Rave Reviews

HBO this week released "Diego Maradona," a film based on the Argentinian's eight-year run with Serie A club Napoli from '84-92, and the "breathtaking work" is the "best sports documentary this year." Director Asif Kapadia found "thousands and thousands of hours of footage of Maradona," which by itself "would be worth the recommendation." However, there is "so much more" (THEATHLETIC.com, 9/27). The "remarkable film" is based on the "previously unseen footage sources from several different inexplicably untapped caches and, most powerfully, narrated by Maradona himself" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 10/2). Here is a sampling of some more reviews of the documentary:

  • The AP: "You may know the outlines of the footballing legend's life, but there's no way you won't learn something from 'Diego Maradona.'"
  • Minneapolis Star Tribune: "You don't even need to be a soccer fan to get swept up."
  • SI.com: "Kapadia peels the onion on his progenitor, revealing each characteristic, no matter how imperfect, until you discover exactly who Maradona is, or at the very least, who he wound up becoming."
  • London Guardian: "Kapadia slices through the persisting myth of D10S to free Diego the man from Maradona the legend."
  • Awful Announcing: "Believe The Hype: 'Diego Maradona' Actually Is One Of The Best Sports Documentaries Ever Made."
