Tweaking The Field

The EuroLeague announced "profound changes" to how it will award licences to participants starting in '20-21. The changes will "directly affect" the Spanish Basketball League (ACB). The EuroLeague's exec commission decided to replace the four places in the competition that are awarded annually to the ACB, Bundesliga, Adriatic League and Russia's VTB with three annual invitations (wildcards). The EuroLeague will decide on the wildcards "based on its own discretion, but the champion of the Adriatic League will have priority." Starting in '20-21, the champion and second-place finisher from the Eurocup will qualify for the EuroLeague (AS, 7/11). The ACB in a statement "expressed its strong rejection of the model unilaterally approved by the EuroLeague" (AS, 7/11).

EuroLeague clubs also agreed that starting in '22-23, a club's owner "will not be permitted to be responsible" for more than 40% of the team's spending in a season. The rest of a club's annual budget "will have to come from a team's ticket sales, merchandising, sponsorship, broadcast revenue and sporting results." Club owners are currently allowed to cover 65% of the spending in a season (PALCO23, 7/11).
