Under Investigation

Aston Villa is facing an EPL investigation after selling Villa Park to the club's owners for $71.4M in May "to comply with profit and sustainability rules." The club's accounts for the year ending May 31 were signed off by the English Football League as "compliant with its profit and sustainability regulations" last month, but "they have yet to be" authorized by the EPL. The EPL rules are "loosely aligned" with the EFL's, but "contain additional complications that could cause problems for Villa" (LONDON TIMES, 7/2).

Aston Villa is "confident" the EPL will not be holding an investigation into the sale of Villa Park to club owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens. Rumors around the future of Villa Park "were set in motion last month" when Sawiris and Edens opted to change the name of a Villa subsidiary, Recon Football Ltd., to NSWE Stadium Ltd. (BIRMINGHAM MAIL, 7/2).
