Warriors get assist from Kamala Harris in promoting new uniform....Hurricanes postpone more games amid COVID-19 outbreak....San Antonio nears hosting full NCAA women's tournament

Warriors Set To Debut "Oakland Forever" City Edition Uniform

The Warriors will debut their new "Oakland Forever" City Edition uniforms tonight at home against the Spurs. The jerseys design, "which the 'We Believe' Warriors made famous" during an '07 playoff run, are blue with Oakland in gold lettering with an orange outline. Warriors coach Steve Kerr: "I love the jerseys. ... The fact that they say Oakland on them is just awesome." The Warriors "wore the white version of the 'We Believe' jerseys during the final regular-season game at Oracle Arena" in the '19 season, but "this will be the first time the group can wear a jersey that actually says Oakland on it" (ESPN.com, 1/20).

It was not lost on the Warriors that the uniform's on-court debut coincides with Inauguration Day, and the team produced a video in which one of the jerseys is gifted to new Vice President and Oakland native Kamala Harris. The Chase Center court will have an "Oakland Forever" design tonight, and jersey patch partner Rakuten has developed digital elements to accompany the campaign. The Warriors also partnered with local apparel company Oaklandish on a complementary limited-edition collection (THE DAILY).

Hurricanes Forced To Postpone More Games Due To COVID-19

The Hurricanes, with five players on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list, have had their next two games against the Panthers "postponed by the league." As the Hurricanes continue to "navigate their way through various COVID-related issues, including quarantine," the decision was made by the NHL today to postpone the team's "scheduled home opener Thursday and Saturday’s game with the Panthers at PNC Arena." The postponements were announced a day after the league postponed the Hurricanes’ game against the Predators. The league said that the Hurricanes' training facility "has been closed, effective immediately, and that the NHL is reviewing and revising the Hurricanes’ schedule" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 1/20).

San Antonio Closer To Hosting Full NCAA Women's Tourney

NCAA officials next week are expected to arrive in San Antonio for a "site inspection of facilities that could accommodate" the entire '21 women’s basketball tournament. Pending the outcome of that visit, the city, which is already hosting the Final Four, "could learn as soon as early next month whether it will host the landmark 64-team event." San Antonio Sports Senior VP & COO Jenny Carnes said NCAA officials "want to see all venues and hotels before final decisions are made." She added that this "will be the NCAA’s first in-person site visit in San Antonio since February 2020" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 1/20).

From Bermuda To New Zealand: SailGP Lines Up Season Schedule

By Chris Smith

Startup sailing league SailGP has finalized the schedule for its second season, which will feature eight events taking place around the globe. The season kicks off in Bermuda in late April, with subsequent stops in Italy, the U.K., Denmark, France, Spain, New Zealand and the U.S. SailGP’s first season, in '19, featured five events. Seven of the eight venues are paying a hosting rights fee this year, a stark contrast from '19, when only a single event host paid a fee. The series’ initially planned second season began in Sydney, Australia, last February, but the remainder of the schedule was later canceled due to public health concerns related to COVID-19.

The second season will run through the Grand Final, which is slated to take place in March '22 in S.F., where the season champion will be awarded a $1M prize purse. CBS Sports has domestic broadcast rights for the series, and international broadcast partners include Fox Sports (Australia) and DAZN (Japan).

Washington Football Team Shuts Down Facility Due To COVID

The Washington Football Team shuttered its training facility and "could keep it closed for the remainder of the week after it learned a number of coaches and staff members tested positive for the coronavirus." The positive cases were "traced back to a small gathering that took place away from the team’s facility after the season ended," according to a sources. The person added that "no players have tested positive and that Coach Ron Rivera has not tested positive." Washington had "only two players test positive for the coronavirus during the season" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/20).

Podcast Picks: What's Next For MLS CBA Talks?

The “Total Soccer Show” looked at CBA negotiations in MLS. Co-host Sam Stejskal noted the league sent an offer last week, but because the union has not responded, MLS Commissioner Don Garber "decided he was going to speak to the media" and "essentially apply some pressure to the MLSPA."

MAN OF TROY: Fox’ Troy Aikman went on SI’s “Media Podcast” and speculated about one day working in an NFL front office. Aikman stopped short of calling it a professional “goal,” but if it was “something I was really adamant about attempting, I believe I could reach out to half a dozen clubs and get a role of some kind.”

TIERS FOR FEARS: The hosts of “Ballfields & Blackboards” looked at an apparent paradox: The same few college football programs have dominated the CFP, but under that top tier, “there is a lot of competition.”
