SEC's Greg Sankey Offers Tips On How To Deal With Pandemic

During today’s virtual Learfield IMG College Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was asked what he would include in a sports management textbook on dealing with a pandemic. Sankey offered the following five points:

  1. "Where there are fractures or cracks in a foundation, they will be magnified. And you have to adapt and understand where your weakness is, how can you address those because the pressures are greater."

  2. "You have to adapt your operating rhythm. So you may have had monthly meetings before, and when the pressure arises, you may have to change. Monthly meetings may not be enough, weekly meetings may not be enough. We met daily with athletics directors for a period of time. We’ve never done that.”

  3. "You’re going to have to be much more intentional in thinking about what issues need to be addressed. We’re having the crisis du jour, if you will, emerge, so we have to talk about that, that has to be an agenda item."

  4. "You still have normal expectations upon you."

  5. "The pressures will be greater, and the unimaginable will be happening. I told our athletics directors in a Power Point presentation in June that when we start, if we start, we will count and encounter situations we cannot currently imagine. That was prophetic."
