CFL Formally Cancels '20 Season, Intends To Play In '21

The CFL today officially canceled the '20 season, “dashing hopes of a shortened season in the hub city of Winnipeg.” The move comes after the league “couldn't solve a number of issues in an effort to try to salvage a season.” The biggest was being “unable to secure financing from the federal government” after presenting a C$30M interest-free loan request earlier this month. Meanwhile, the CFL and CFLPA “could not come to terms on an extension of the CBA, though the CFL said it was close to a deal.” CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said the league is “absolutely committed” to playing in '21 (CP, 8/17).
