Big Ten, Pac-12 Call Off Fall Sports In Historic Move

The Big Ten today "decided to cancel the college football season" for fall '20 with hopes of playing in spring '21. The decision, which came after a morning meeting of the conference's presidents, marks the "first Power Five conference to decide not to play this fall." Sentiment "throughout college football entering Sunday night was that the Big Ten and Pac-12 would cancel their seasons this week." But the "combination of outspoken coaches and the #WeWantToPlay X #WeAreUnited movement" seemed to "give pause" to power brokers. In today's statement, the Big Ten cited "medical advice and counsel" from experts (CBSSPORTS.com, 8/11).

Meanwhile, a source said that the Pac-12 also is "canceling its 2020 fall football season." Like the Big Ten, the Pac-12 "plans to play in the spring" (TWITTER.com, 8/11). This "leaves all eyes on the Big 12, which has a call later Tuesday." The "question around college football will be if the Big 12 aligns with the ACC and SEC to attempt to play or follows the lead" of the Big Ten and Pac-12 (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/11).
