Phelps Highlights Mental Health In HBO's "The Weight Of Gold"

HBO tonight at 9:00pm ET will debut "The Weight of Gold," a one-hour documentary on the mental health challenges faced by Olympic athletes. Michael Phelps is an executive producer, is "featured in and narrates Brett Rapkin’s documentary," which also includes Olympians Bode Miller, Gracie Gold, Sasha Cohen, Apolo Ohno, Shaun White and others (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/28). Phelps: "It was wild to see that I wasn’t alone, but it also made me feel good, because there were other people that could help me understand it’s okay to not be okay” (“Today,” NBC, 7/29).

CNN.com notes the TV premiere was "intended to coincide with the Olympics, which adds another somber note to this soul-searching documentary." The WALL STREET JOURNAL writes Phelps is "quite forthcoming about his own difficulties." MASHABLE.com writes despite "skipping over the feelings" of hopefuls who cannot compete until '21, the "content that follows remains compelling and important." NPR: "A well-crafted wake-up call."
