NFL Acts Swiftly With Myles Garrett's Indefinite Suspension

The NFL levied steep penalties on Browns DE Myles Garrett for his on-field incident with Steelers QB Mason Rudolph on Thursday, handing out an “unprecedented” indefinite suspension that will last at least through the end of the regular season and postseason. ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes the NFL reached its decision early Friday morning. He said, “Usually it takes the NFL a little bit of time to sort through the replays and to determine the proper discipline. But in this case, there really was no argument.” The league “wanted to send a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Garrett must meet with the commissioner’s office before he can be reinstated. The NFL “reserves the right to make the determination as to when he will return.” Schefter: “They can let the emotion come out of this. … There are no assurances when he will return next season.” The NFLPA is expected to appeal Garrett’s suspension, but Schefter said, “They can appeal all they want. I think the NFL is going to stand behind its discipline and not back down from it” (“NFL Live,” ESPN, 11/15).
