Trump Invites USWNT To White House, Criticizes Megan Rapinoe

President Trump today formally invited the USWNT to the White House, while criticizing F Megan Rapinoe, who has "spoken forcefully against him during this year’s World Cup." Rapinoe had "expressed doubt that Trump would invite the team to the White House if it managed to defend its title, predicting he would try to save face if the team declined." However, Trump said that the USWNT would "still be invited no matter how the tournament shakes out, knocking Rapinoe for getting ahead of herself." Trump tweeted, "I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job! We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose” (POLITICO.com, 6/26).

USWNT D Ali Krieger tweeted in response to Trump's invitation that she would "stand by" Rapinoe and "sit this one out as well" (TWITTER.com, 6/26).
