Phoenix Council Delays Vote On Renovations For Suns Arena

The Phoenix City Council is delaying a vote on a deal with the Suns to renovate Talking Stick Resort Arena after failing to come up with the needed votes for approval. The vote had been scheduled for this afternoon, but Mayor Thelda Williams and two council members asked for the delay and the vote be moved to Jan. 23 after it became clear there were not the necessary five votes for approval on the eight-member body. The council still needs to approve the delay. The deal includes a $230M arena renovation and creates a $37.5M future repair fund.

Critics are opposed to the city and team trying to get the deal approved before a March run-off election for mayor and two council seats. They also want more public hearings on the arena. Suns President & CEO Jason Rowley says the team is still committed to staying in downtown Phoenix. "Our priority remains being in Downtown Phoenix long term, and we’re excited about the opportunity that lies ahead," he said.
