Top Racing Execs Gather For NBC Sports Motorsports Summit

NBC Sports today held a first-of-its-kind motorsports summit in Stamford with representatives from all of its motorsports properties, in a bid to get the leagues to start working closely together. The event, which started at 7:45am ET and went to 3:00, drew around 40 attendees from nine different properties, including NASCAR President Steve Phelps, Exec VP & CMO Jill Gregory, ISC COO Joie Chitwood III, IndyCar CEO Mark Miles, IMSA President & COO Scott Atherton and SMI President & CEO Marcus Smith. Also on hand were NBC Sports Chair Mark Lazarus, Exec Producer Sam Flood, President of Programming Jon Miller, Senior VP & Coordinating Producer Dan Steir and NBC Sports CMO Jenny Storms.

The event touched on everything from holding doubleheader events and sharing venues to doing more joint marketing and promotions between the properties and NBC. For example, Flood told THE DAILY that one idea discussed was “creating stretches like even a motorsports week in America where we have 7 consecutive days of some sort of content that ties to the racing world.” Flood also shared that SMI’s Smith spoke up about the idea of adding an IMSA race to Charlotte Motor Speedways’ roval race weekend. Flood said the summit will become an annual event.
