SMS 2018: How Tech Innovation Affects Sponsorship

Technology factors into the delivery of sports experiences more than ever before, and the rise of innovation has teams and leagues scrambling to partner with a new wave of companies as data becomes increasingly more in-demand. Panelists today at the Octagon Sports Marketing Symposium discussed the latest developments in the tech space, with NFL Senior VP/Partners, Sponsorship & Consumer Products Renie Anderson noting that some of the league’s top endemic categories from five years ago do not even exist anymore.

Anderson said, “We’re not just slapping a logo on a product anymore. We’re challenged to work harder on new categories and figure out how they can enhance the fan experience.” She cited ridesharing as one of the latest categories to spring up at an accelerated rate in recent years.

NBA President of Team Marketing & Business Operations and Chief Innovation Officer Amy Brooks said there is “new value that teams and leagues can deliver across a lot of categories” in the current landscape. She cited the NBA 2K League as a venture that has already provided learnings for the league through sponsorships.
