MLB's Rob Manfred Promises Pace-Of-Play Changes For '18

By Eric Fisher

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred today vowed pace-of-play rules changes will be in place for the '18 season, regardless of whether he reaches a deal with the MLBPA. Manfred again stressed his intended process is to reach an agreement, but he holds unilateral power to impose changes should talks fail to produce a deal. He said, “My preferred path is a negotiated agreement with the players. But if we can’t get an agreement we are going to have rules changes in 2018 one way or the other.”

Manfred also defended new Marlins co-Owners Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter, who have already been under fire for reported deliberations about trading away RF Giancarlo Stanton and the $295M still owed to him. “It’s unfair, really, to criticize a decision -- if it turns out to be the decision -- to move a player who has a contract that somebody else negotiated,” Manfred said. When asked what he liked about the Marlins sale process, Manfred said, “I like the [$1.1B] price. I like the new owners that we got. I like them a lot. I think they’re going to be great for Miami. Whatever little hiccups there may have been along the way -- every process has its issues -- I think the outcome is outstanding.”

Lease Could Keep Cavaliers At Quicken Loans Arena Through '44

The Cavaliers "could play in Quicken Loans Arena" through '44 under "terms of the team's new lease." The Cavaliers' proposed $140M "transformation deal with Cuyahoga County and Cleveland included a provision to extend the current lease by seven years" to '34. But the "new deal also allows for two five-year renewal options." The 134-page lease also includes "details about the upgrades," which will be completed by Dec. 31, 2019, and the additional $92.8M in rent that "will be paid by the team over the next seven years" (CLEVELAND.com, 11/16).

Sources: MLB Rangers Negotiating Extension For GM Jon Daniels

MLB Rangers President of Baseball Operations & GM Jon Daniels is entering the final year of his contract, and sources "suggested that a multi-year extension has been discussed and is possibly being negotiated." Daniels was hired in '05 and is the "second-longest tenured general manager in baseball." A new extension "would be his fifth" (STAR-TELEGRAM.com, 11/16). Daniels is "already the longest-tenured GM in Rangers history and has overseen five postseason berths and two AL titles" (DALLASNEWS.com, 11/16).

Stephen Curry Is First Hoops Player To Partner With MasterClass

Warriors G Stephen Curry is partnering with education brand MasterClass to "embark on his first online courses in which he'll teach, in a video component, the fundamentals of what makes him one of the most skilled, creative players in the NBA." Curry is the "company's first basketball player." His class is now open for pre-enrollment at www.MasterClass.com/SC and will go live in early '18. The enrollment fee is $90 for an individual class and $180 for a "year of unlimited access to all classes taught by their professionals." Curry will "occasionally pop in for Q&A sessions" (ESPN.com, 11/16).

Throwback Thursday: Stay Awhile

This week five years ago, the Marlins after a 69-93 season famously dumped payroll by trading SS Jose Reyes and Ps Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle, among others, to the Blue Jays. The trade came only seven months after the club opened a new $515M ballpark and ownership touted a new commitment to spending in free agency. Ken Rosenthal called the trade a "violation of trust" by Owner Jeffrey Loria. Loria defended himself by saying, "People should feel betrayed by the fact that we were losing so much."
