Tampa Bay Teams Put Funds Toward Moving Confederate Monument

The Lightning, Rays and Buccaneers today issued a joint statement regarding the effort to remove a Confederate monument from downtown Tampa, saying they have "dedicated funds to assist in moving the statue from the public space in front of the courthouse." The statement adds: "Now more than ever before, we must stand united" (TWITTER.com, 8/17).

This comes after Hillsborough County commissioners yesterday "gave an ultimatum" to those seeking to move the monument: "Raise the money yourselves or it stays." Donations to move the statue have "poured in," including $5,000 from former Bucs coach Tony Dungy and $50,000 from former AFL Tampa Bay Storm Owner Bob Gries (TAMPABAY.com, 8/17).
