Jaguars' Khan Unveils Plans For Fields, Residences, Retail & Offices

Jaguars Owner Shad Khan today "unveiled his plan to turn the troubled city-owned Shipyards property into a mix of residences, retail and offices, as well as practice fields" for the team. Drawings of the project "showed a series of glassy, layered skyscrapers separated by swaths of green space." The Jaguars "indicated that the property would include a marina, a hotel, an amphitheater, a park and a twisty pedestrian bridge." A formal proposal of the plan "will be submitted to the Downtown Investment Authority" on Monday (JACKSONVILLE.com, 2/17).

Chargers Question Independence Of San Diego's Stadium Task Force

By Daniel Kaplan

The Chargers questioned the independence of the city’s new stadium task force in a letter today to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer from the team’s Special Counsel to the President Mark Fabiani. Fabiani questioned whether task force Chair Adam Day’s statement was independent of the mayor, given mayoral aides were present during task force meetings. He asked why the mayor’s chief political consultant, Jason Roe, who has been present at the meetings, was also advising Delaware North.

Fabiani asked, “What legal and ethical issues are raised by Mr. Roe’s dual role as an apparent de facto Task Force member as a registered lobbyist for the Delaware North Company, who is bidding to become the new concessionaire at Qualcomm tadium and, potentially at any new stadium in San Diego?” In the four-page letter, Fabiani also questioned the task force hiring as a spokesperson Tony Manolatos, given that Day had said he has no budget. Fabiani asked if donations then would become public. He also took Manolatos to task for tweeting on January 16, “If you believe a stadium won’t get built under your terms and you may skip town, do you keep working or launch a finger-pointing campaign?” Fabiani then questioned whether it makes good sense to retain such an individual.

In concluding, Fabiani wrote he hoped the mayor’s answers would shed light on the independence of the task force, placing quote marks around the word independence. The Chargers have for over a decade been talking with various city mayors about a new stadium. However, this year appears different, with the team worried about another team relocating to nearby L.A. That appears to be heightening the public heat and perhaps making ‘15 a make-or-break year.

Bucks Unveil New 18,000-Square-Foot Offices For About 140 Employees

The Bucks today "unveiled the team's offices," and the design "emphasizes natural light and an open, collaborative environment for about 140 Bucks employees." The bulk of the team's front-office staff "had been housed in an upstairs space at the Milwaukee Theatre" while Milwaukee-based Eppstein Uhen Architects worked on the project. The Bucks "occupy nearly 18,000 square feet" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 2/17).

Cubs Ask Judge To Deny Rooftops' Construction-Stoppage Request

The Cubs today asked a judge to "deny an emergency request from two rooftop businesses to temporarily stop construction at Wrigley Field." The team said in court papers that the businesses "haven't provided any evidence that they will 'suffer any harm over the next few days or weeks' to justify an emergency restraining order." The businesses "sought a restraining order last week to halt the installation of video scoreboards and advertising at Wrigley Field that they argue would block their views into the stadium and destroy their operations" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 2/17).

NASL San Antonio Scorpions Adds Sponsor's Logo To Crest

By Ian Thomas

The NASL San Antonio Scorpions have signed a new sponsorship deal that will see a sponsor’s logo become an official part of the team crest, but will not result in any sort of rebrand. The sponsor, local investment management firm Deeproot Funds, will expand on a current partnership with a new multiyear deal with the club that is valued as one of the largest sponsorship deals in NASL history. Additional financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Deeproot Funds had previously entered into a sponsor deal with the team in March ’14.

With this new deal, the Deeproot Funds logo will be integrated into the Scorpions' team crest and will be featured in any application where the logo is seen, including player jerseys, merchandise, tickets, broadcasts and in-stadium images. Scorpions President & GM Howard Cornfield said that the team and Deeproot Funds were looking for further ways to expand their partnership in a unique way, and both parties felt that this was a way to further integrate what they felt was already a strong connection between the two.
