Kasim Reed Vows To Tear Down Turner Field After Braves Leave

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed today said he "would not leave a vacant Ted" and added that the Braves' ballpark "would be torn down." He also said that he "would not interfere" with Cobb County's deal with the team and that he "wanted to make the 'unmistakable message' that the city wants the team to remain." Reed said that the Braves asked for $150M-250M for infrastructure improvements "for the team to remain downtown," and that "would have left the city 'absolutely cash-strapped.'" He also said there was "absolute fatigue" from City Council members about backing a second venue (AJC.com, 11/12).

Also today, the City Council held a press conference to "complain they weren't included in the negotiations" with the Braves prior to their decision to move. Council President Caesar Mitchell said that the body is "asking for a briefing" with Reed and a meeting with the Braves to "understand the team's decision." The Council's "hope is to put together a counteroffer" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 11/12).
