Teddy Mascot Wins Nationals' Presidents Race For First Time

The Teddy Roosevelt mascot at Nationals Park today won the fourth-inning Presidents Race for the first time, wearing an Under Armour-branded headband and bright gold shoes "modeled after those made famous" by Usain Bolt. The crowd attending the Phillies-Nationals game "roared and began chanting his name" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 10/3).

Twitter was flooded with reaction to Teddy finally winning a race. The St. Paul Pioneer Press’ Ben Goessling writes, “Teddy's losing streak lasted 538 games – or the number of votes in the Electoral College. That's so DC.” The Wall Street Journal’s Sam Walker wrote, “After Roosevelt wins #Nats mascot race, reps for Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson flock to spin room.” Talking Points Memo’s Brian Beutler wrote, “Foam Teddy should dispatch a fleet of foam navy ships on a tour of the Potomac.” The Washington Post’s Adam Kilgore wrote, “Look at the size of Teddy's head when he was younger. You're telling me he's clean?”
