Twitter Sets New Sports-Related Record During Euro 2012 Final

Twitter said that global traffic peaked at 15,358 tweets per second yesterday as Spain scored its fourth and final goal against Italy in the UEFA Euro 2012 championship match, "setting a sports-related record on the social networking site." Twitter said that it registered a total of 16.5 million tweets worldwide during the match in Kiev (AP, 7/2). Madrid's central plaza today was "all geared up for a victory rally." The Spanish team was scheduled to meet King Juan Carlos today and take an open-air bus ride through the capital "to the adulation of tens of thousands" (AP, 7/2).

Meanwhile, UEFA President Michel Platini said host nations Ukraine and Poland "organised an exceptional tournament, that will stay in people's memories" (AFP, 7/2).
