Low Turnout In Nassau County For Referendum On Islanders Arena

Nassau County election officials said that “turnout was low” early today as voters decided on funding for construction of a new Islanders arena to replace Nassau Coliseum. Nassau County Board of Elections Commissioner William Biamonte late this morning called the turnout for the single-issue referendum “abysmally low.” Board of Elections Commissioner Louis Savinetti also said that “turnout was low.” Polls at 362 voting locations opened at 6:00am ET and will close at 9:00pm (NEWSDAY.com, 8/1).

NYTimes.com’s Chris Botta on Twitter reported, “Projection: #Isles referendum turnout will be between 50,000 - 75,000, less than 10% of registered voters (900,000).”
