MSG At Halfway Point Of First Phase Of Renovation Project

By Fred Dreier, Staff Writer

Construction crews are at the halfway point with the first phase of MSG’s renovation, and the arena is on schedule to be ready for the NHL Rangers’ season opener on Oct. 27. MSG President & CEO Hank Ratner led journalists on a tour of the arena today to show the progress. “On the construction side and the commercial side, the transformation is on schedule,” Ratner said. Crews have installed new seats in the lower bowl, framed out the expanded locker rooms and the new Delta Sky Club hospitality suite, and have expanded mid- and lower-level concourses.

Ratner said 19 of the 20 event-level suites, valued at $1M per-year, have been contracted, and that 75% of the 58 Madison-level suites have also been sold. Crews must finish construction to the concourses and lower suites, as well as the Delta Club, which will provide views of players entering and exiting the locker rooms. Ratner said the arena will not have to cancel any of its fall events due to construction. The construction is being done over three summers, and will finish in the fall of '13.

Churchill Downs Taking Cautious Approach To Instant Racing Game

Churchill Downs Inc. Chair & CEO Bob Evans today reiterated that the company "questions how successful the slot-like Instant Racing game could be in the local market" and said that CDI will "wait until an appeal is finished before installing the game." Churchill Downs has "expressed interest in implementing the game at some point." Kentucky Downs in Franklin is approved for 200 of the machines. Evans: "We think it's a good idea to get a definitive answer from the court before making that kind of investment" (COURIER-JOURNAL.com, 7/28).

Meanwhile, CDI's Q2 profits grew 45% from the year-ago period to $40.1M, or $2.37 per share. CDI earned $27.6M, or $1.85 per share, in Q2 '10. The company's revenues rose 16%, "driven chiefly by gains in its casino businesses and online horse wagering operations, both of which expanded significantly in 2010 through acquisitions" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 7/28).
