WNBA Notes: Mystics-Fever sellout adds to league's 'golden era'

In D.C., Kevin Blackistone wrote we have “entered a golden era for a woman basketball player, but not for women’s professional basketball.” Rather it is WNBA Indiana Fever G Caitlin Clark, and her "alone, who is all the rage.” The Washington Mystics announced Tuesday that its June 7 home game against the Fever “sold out -- in three hours.” That was after the game was moved from the Mystics’ 4,200-seat Entertainment and Sports Arena “across the Anacostia” to the Wizards’ 20,356-seat Capital One Arena (WASHINGTON POST, 4/25).

SHARING THE PIE: BLOOMBERG NEWS’ Adam Minter noted Clark recently signed a $28M, eight-year contract with Nike. The uptick of endorsements and other opportunities for some athletes “over others disrupts the league’s goal of keeping a competitive balance.” Minter wrote WNBA sponsors, such as Nike, “should invest more in promoting established players -- in addition to the incoming group of high-profile rookies.” Clark “deserves the endorsement,” but it “makes no sense” that Las Vegas Aces F A’ja Wilson, a two-time champion and league MVP, does not have a Nike shoe deal either (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 4/25).
