1980: Meets a rising high school senior from Wilmington, N.C., Michael Jordan, while working as a counselor at a Campbell University basketball camp

1980-81: Burlington Industries, internal auditor

1985: Founds the Achievements Unlimited basketball school in Greensboro, which provides underserved kids the opportunity to attend a one-week summer camp at no cost

1983-85: Southern Bell, Yellow Pages salesman

1988-89: Works for state Appeals Court Judge Bob Orr

1989-96: Fred A. Whitfield, Attorney at Law. In 1991, co-founds Woods/Whitfield Sports with Mobile, Ala.-based lawyer Richard Woods. Woods is the agent for Bo Jackson, Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden and Buffalo Bills linebacker Cornelius Bennett. Whitfield reps Greensboro native and eventual Minnesota Vikings draft pick Tripp Welborne and New York Giants defensive back Bobby Abrams.

1995: Inducted into the Campbell University Sports Hall of Fame

1996-2000: Whitfield & Blackmon, Attorneys at Law, senior partner 

1996-2000: Nike Basketball, director of player development and other marketing roles

2003-06: Jordan Brand (a division of Nike), director of business and legal affairs

2006-18: Hornets Sports & Entertainment (formerly Bobcats Sports & Entertainment), owner of Charlotte Hornets (formerly the Bobcats) and the now defunct WNBA Charlotte Sting, president, COO and alternate governor

2011: Receives Thurgood Marshall Award of Excellence

2012: Spectrum Center hosts the Democratic National Convention

2013: Given the key to the city of Greensboro

2014: Oversees renaming of the Bobcats to the Charlotte Hornets

2016: Negotiates an arena naming-rights deal to switch from Time Warner Cable to Charter’s Spectrum; leads the launch of the NBA G League Greensboro Swarm.

2018: Named president, vice chairman and alternate governor, Hornets Sports & Entertainment

2019: Charlotte hosts the NBA All-Star Game

2020: Oversees the launch of the NBA 2K League Hornets Venom GT and runs point for the arena’s hosting of the Republican National Convention

2021: Named to O’Reilly Automotive board of directors

2022: Successfully negotiates an agreement with city government to extend the Hornets lease 15 years through 2045 in exchange for $275 million worth of publicly funded arena upgrades and a new practice facility

2023: Announces that he is stepping down from the Hornets
