ESPN broadcast picks up on PitchCom communications during Cardinals-Dodgers game

An in-game ESPN interview with Dodgers P Kiké Hernandez yesterday led to the broadcast "tipping" Dodgers pitches against the Cardinals, according to Jason Owens of YAHOO SPORTS. ESPN went to Hernandez for an in-game interview during the top of the third inning. Cardinals CF Victor Scott II led off with an infield single that “put Hernandez on alert for a potential double play.” Hernandez then "turned up the PitchCom speaker in his ear," but “there was a problem.” Hernandez said he needed to turn his PitchCom “higher” because he “can't hear it with you guys." Owens noted as soon as he did, a “new voice joined the broadcast” appearing to say "fastball, away." Hernandez then asked: "Can you guys hear that?" ESPN broadcaster Karl Ravech replied: "I think they said fastball, away." Owens noted this “continued throughout the inning," though it is "unlikely that the Cardinals would have been able to take advantage of the snafu.” Any delay in the broadcast from live action would “render the information useless.” But it is still an “issue that should and certainly will be addressed” (YAHOO SPORTS, 3/31).
