Alberts brings business sense to guide Texas A&M athletics through changing landscape

New Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts carries an "immediate task of bringing the Aggie athletic department into the rapidly approaching new business landscape of college athletics,” according to Travis Brown of the Bryan-College Station EAGLE. Alberts “approaches the future with a mind for business.” He said, “We’re going to run a business and we’re going to run as clean and disciplined of a business as we possibly can. But rest assured, we will never compromise our values in support of student-athletes, because you can do both.” Brown noted Alberts having his “finger on the pulse of the future of college athletics, plus a unique business savvy" was one of the "leading factors in why A&M President Mark Welsh, along with the search committee, decided Alberts was his man.” Welsh said Alberts “looks at things a little bit different than a lot of the other athletic directors looked at the business of college athletics and how it needs to adjust in the future.” Brown wrote it was the leadership at Texas A&M, namely Welsh, who convinced Alberts the school was the "next stop in his journey” after serving as Nebraska AD. Nebraska has “been in a period of turnover in leadership,” hiring Chancellor Rodney Bennett last summer and currently in the process of hiring a new president. However, Alberts “shot down the idea that leadership turnover was a reason for his departure” (Bryan-College Station EAGLE, 3/18).
