Cohen less involved in day-to-day decisions as Mets eye more calculated approach

Mets owner Steve Cohen is "less involved in the day-to-day decisions of the franchise” as he approaches the start of his fourth full season as the owner, and he “prefers it that way,” according to Andrew Tredinnick of the Bergen RECORD. Cohen would prefer President of Baseball Operations David Stearns to “approach him with ideas about adding to the roster.” But there is “also a clear, less flashy plan in place ahead of the 2024 season.” After two years of "paying top dollar to bring in the top pitchers on the market in an effort to bridge the gap and falling short,” the Mets have been “more calculated ahead of the 2024 season.” They have “shelled out shorter-term deals to players with upside” to "give time for the next generation to develop." The mission is to “build a more sustainable foundation that can be supplemented with Cohen's financial might moving forward.” Ahead of the 2024 season, the “ever-optimistic Cohen is encouraged most by the strength of the talent in the minor-league levels.” After Cohen purchased the Mets for $2.4B in Nov. 2020, he said that he would be “‘slightly disappointed’ if the Mets did not win the World Series in three to five years.” But Cohen on Sunday admitted that he had “hoped for more winning seasons," but “now understands that developing a strong foundation takes time” (Bergen RECORD, 3/17).
