A's in talks with Neon Museum to display local Vegas artwork at new ballpark

The A’s are “in talks to include some of the Neon Museum’s vintage Las Vegas resort signs” in-and-around its planned Las Vegas ballpark, according to Mick Akers of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. The museum confirmed that it is “working with the A’s on a potential partnership" but "nothing has been finalized." Akers noted that aside from some signs already located at the Neon Museum on Las Vegas Boulevard next to Cashman Field, the museum also “could save and restore signage from the Tropicana to include the history of the decades old hotel-casino within the A’s ballpark.” A’s owner John Fisher also confirmed that pieces of his family’s art collection are “planned to be displayed throughout the ballpark.” The family's collection of art includes some on display at the S.F. Modern Museum of Art. Fisher: "We’re looking to bring significant amounts of art to the stadium, both inside and out. Partially from my parent’s collection, but we’re also working very closely with the local community" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 3/11).

ON THE DOCKET: Akers in a separate piece reported the Nevada Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next month regarding a lower court judge’s decision to "block a political action committee from challenging public funding" for the A’s Las Vegas ballpark. Court records filed last week showed arguments between Schools Over Stadiums, created by the Nevada State Education Association, and A’s lobbyists Danny Thompson and Thomas Morley are set for April 9. The matter revolves around a law passed last year that earmarks up to $380M in public financing for the A’s planned $1.5B, 33,000-fan-capacity ballpark to be constructed on the Strip (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 3/11).
